We are deeply saddened by death of our dear friend, amateur radio operator and Serbian Air Force pilot Goran Savic, YT2A (ex YZ1SG), who lost his life in an airplane accident on Wednesday, September 26, 2012.
Goran was born in Zenica on December 5, 1973. He spent most of his childhood and primary education in Cajetina before he enrolled Military School in Belgrade and Military Academy later on. He started his amateur radio career in Radio club Cajetina YU1ANA during eighth grade of primary school and he got his “Class A” licence in Mataruska banja in 1999. Goran’s first personal callsign was YZ1SG before he got the YT2A call in 2007 which then became his permanent callsign. He was the Vice-president of the Serbian Amateur Radio Union from 2001 to 2005 and a member of its Executive Committee from 2005 to 2011.
Goran became a member of Radio club “Sevojno” and West Serbia Contest Club a couple of years ago. He was an extraordinary operator with 340 confirmed DXCC and many confirmed IOTA entries. He was also a great supporter of the WFF and YUFF programs in which he took part as YT2A/P by activating many FF destinations in Serbia. IOTA contests were one of his favourites and the last one in which we had the honour of seeing him operate was IOTA 2012 this August. He was also a part of our team which participated in this year’s IARU contest as YT0HQ on 40m.
He will be missed by his sons aged 3 and 6, his wife, his family, numerous friends and colleages and the entire amateur radio community in Serbia. He will be remembered as a great man, father, husband, amateur radio operator and enthusiast and one of the best pilots in Serbian Air Force. May he rest in peace.
The following video was recorded in the cockpit of Goran’s Galeb G4 airplane during his aerobatics performance at Batajnica Air Show in Belgrade (September 2012).
